Chromeo unveils a new remix of their DRAM-featuring single “Must’ve Been” from rising R&B stars THEY. today. Check it out here. Handpicked by Chromeo, THEY. is Dante Jones and Drew Love who prior to joining forces were writing songs for Kelly Clarkson and will.i.am and Chris Brown and Jeremih, respectively, and together, make nuanced R&B with a pop sensibility.
Speaking on the remix, Jones explains, “I’ve been a Chromeo fan since the Fancy Footwork days so when I had the chance to make a THEY. version of ‘Must’ve Been’ I knew I had to come with something special.”
“Obviously we’ve been fans of THEY. for a minute, Dante’s a genius producer,” Dave 1 tellsComplex. “We were initially expecting some sort of remix or rework but they’ve turned ‘Must’ve Been’ into an entirely different song! Not gonna lie, it might be better than the original.”
THEY.’s remix of “Must’ve Been” is yet another example of the collaborative spirit that flows through Head Over Heels, the fifth studio LP from the Montreal funk legends. Featuring twelve tracks of funk and R&B history colliding with modern pop songcraft, the album is a collaborative celebration where Dave 1 and P-Thugg’s favorite artists’ signature touches intermingle in theChromeo world. The album’s guestlist includes a cast of superheroes from funk’s past (guitaristJesse Johnson of The Time, revered session bassist Pino Palladino, Mtume vocalist Tawatha Agee), present (funkadelic lovechild DRAM, R&B auteur The-Dream, post-colonial emcee French Montana) and future (upstart London bad gal Stefflon Don, rising neo-soul star Amber Mark, downtown New York darlings Onyx Collective). Absolute legends Raphael Saadiq and Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins even join the party!
In celebration of the release, the band continues to tour worldwide. Additionally, the band’s North American fall dates kick off September 3 in Calgary, AB with further stops in Chicago, Nashville, Brooklyn and beyond as well as shows in London, Manchester, and Paris.
Chromeo is the duo of Montreal natives and high school best friends David “Dave 1” Macklovitch and Patrick “P-Thugg” Gemayel. The group rose to prominence with their seminal 2007 release Fancy Footwork, heralding the dawn of the ‘80s electro-funk revival.
